Welcome to our website

Welcome to HTW’s Competence Centre  “Money, Trade, Finance and Development”. The Competence Centre bundles the knowledge and experience of HTW’s faculty in the field of international macroeconomics with a specific focus on monetary, financial and international trade issues, and links them with the know-how of our international partners.

The Competence Centre gives special attention to the analysis of policy lessons from the recent global financial and economic crisis. While it is well understood and undisputed that the global crisis originated in the U.S. subprime mortgage market, and brought the world economy to the brink of a new depression in 2008/9, large controversies remain about the underlying causes of the crisis, its international transmission and policy remedies to prevent similar events in the future. With our research, we are trying to clarify some of these issues.

In addition, we work on the question of how to improve the global economic order. As not only the recent crisis, but also the economic history of the past 40 years has shown, current rules and institutions both for international finance and trade are insufficient. They neither guarantee stability of the world economy, nor do they provide an adequately supportive environment for the economic development of the least developed countries. While the so-called Stiglitz commission, appointed by the President of the United Nations General Assembly in 2008, has touched upon a large number of reform requirements, these are neither completely coherent nor entirely spelled out in detail. The Competence Centre’s work will contribute to this discussion.

The research of this competence centre is empirical and applied, yet firmly based in economic theory. It is empirical as it uses not only the experience of the past years, but also modern econometric techniques. It is applied as it tries to give policy makers answers to pressing questions. It is based in theory as it embraces the vast body of existing economic research from multiple paradigms.
